North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened for a summit, where they delved into discussions regarding military affairs, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the possibility of Russian assistance for North Korea’s secretive satellite program.

Upon Kim’s arrival in Russia via train from North Korea, Putin guided him through Russia’s cutting-edge space rocket launch site, the Vostochny Cosmodrome, where Kim inquired extensively about rocket technology.

Following the tour, Putin, 70, and Kim, 39, engaged in extensive talks with their respective ministers, followed by a one-on-one conversation. They then indulged in a lavish lunch featuring Russian “pelmeni” dumplings made with Kamchatka crab, followed by sturgeon with mushrooms and potatoes.

During the lunch, Kim raised a toast to Putin’s well-being, the success of “great Russia,” and the enduring friendship between Korea and Russia. He also expressed confidence in Russia’s triumph in what he termed a “sacred fight” against the West in the Ukraine war.

“I firmly believe that the heroic Russian army and people will brilliantly inherit their victories and traditions and vigorously demonstrate their noble dignity and honor on the two fronts of military operations and building a powerful nation,” Kim conveyed to Putin. He continued, “The Russian army and people will certainly win a great victory in the sacred struggle for the punishment of a great evil that claims hegemony and feeds an expansionist illusion.”

Despite concerns from U.S. and South Korean officials about potential weapons and ammunition exchanges, both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied any such intentions.

While Putin hinted at discussions surrounding military cooperation, he revealed few specifics. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu attended the talks, and the Kremlin indicated that certain sensitive topics were not to be disclosed publicly.

For Russia, the summit presented an opportunity to provoke the United States, Ukraine’s primary supporter among major powers. However, the extent of Putin’s commitment to fulfilling North Korean technology requests remained unclear.

Putin disclosed that Kim intended to visit military and civilian aviation factories in the Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur and inspect Russia’s Pacific fleet in Vladivostok as part of his ongoing activities in Russia.
