Explosive Power Struggle: Governor Obaseki Locks Deputy Out of Office

In a new twist to the ongoing feud between Governor Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, tension flared as Shaibu was denied access to his former office at the Government House in Benin, Edo State. Shaibu, who arrived at the Government House on Monday, found the gate to his office locked.

He expressed his surprise, stating that he had not received any official communication regarding the relocation of his office. He stressed that proper channels should have been followed, with a formal letter from the governor’s office.

As of now, Governor Obaseki has not responded to this development. Sources close to the situation claim that Shaibu has already relocated his office outside the Government House, and his presence at the old office was not expected on that day, as no meeting had been scheduled.

Last week, a letter reportedly from the Head of Service directed Shaibu to move to a new office at a different location. However, insiders suggest that this new office is in need of significant repairs.

This incident is the latest episode in the ongoing power struggle between Governor Obaseki and his deputy. Despite rumors of an impeachment plot against Shaibu, the Edo Assembly has denied such allegations. The rift even led to accusations of a coup plot by Obaseki against his deputy, although Shaibu publicly expressed his loyalty at a recent event.

The situation evokes memories of past political conflicts, like the 2007 dispute between Obasanjo and Atiku. It appears that as Obaseki approaches the end of his second term, tensions continue to escalate, resulting in a disheartening and controversial situation. The phrase “Kasala don burst” seems fitting for this unfolding drama.
