Ibadan, Oyo State, grieves the loss of its esteemed leader, the Olubadan. Oba Olalekan Balogun who passed away peacefully on Thursday evening at the University College Hospital (UCH) after a brief illness.
Media aide Oladele Ogunsola confirmed the news, stating the Olubadan “bowed out gracefully” at the hospital. His brother, Kola Balogun, revealed he was admitted with a “slight malaria fever.”
Governor Seyi Makinde paid tribute, calling the Olubadan “a mighty Iroko,” a symbol of royal excellence and achievement. He lauded the monarch’s positive impact on Ibadanland during his two-year reign.
“With deep respect for God’s will,” Makinde’s statement declared, “we announce the passing of our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.”
The governor further notes that Oba Dr. Balogun’s passing leaves a significant void in Ibadan’s history and heritage.
Beyond his royal role, the late Olubadan boasted an impressive background. He held a Ph.D., served as a university lecturer, and enjoyed success in business. His prior experiences included a management position at Shell British Petroleum, a gubernatorial candidacy with the defunct Nigeria People’s Party (NPP), and a stint as a Senator.
Having ascended the throne on March 11, 2022, with the high chiefs’ endorsement, the late Olubadan’s reign lasted two years.
Following Islamic traditions, he was laid to rest on Friday evening at his ancestral home, Aliiwo compound in Ibadan.
