Detained Monarch: A Blow to Traditional Norms

The recent detention of the traditional ruler of Ewu kingdom, listed among wanted suspects by the Defense Headquarters in connection with the tragic death of 17 soldiers in the Okuama community, has sparked widespread concern and condemnation.

While the monarch exhibited a display of dignity and confidence by voluntarily surrendering himself to the police and asserting his innocence in a video statement, his subsequent transfer to military custody has raised eyebrows and generated significant discontent.

Questions abound regarding the legality and appropriateness of subjecting a civilian, particularly a traditional ruler, to military jurisdiction. The lack of transparency surrounding the case and the absence of updates on the proceedings have fueled speculation and unease.

Detained Monarch: A Blow to Traditional Norms

The silence surrounding the monarch’s detention and the possibility of him being subjected to military interrogation without due process raise serious concerns about the erosion of traditional norms and the integrity of our justice system.

In response to this unsettling development, Urhobo chiefs from the Traditional Council of Chiefs in Ewu-Urhobo, Delta State, have demanded the immediate release of Clement Ikolo, emphasizing his innocence and his efforts to promote peace within the kingdom.

The chiefs stand firm in their assertion that the detained monarch bears no responsibility for the tragic events and urge authorities to focus their efforts on identifying and prosecuting the true perpetrators of the heinous crime.

As the community awaits updates on the case and justice for the fallen soldiers, it is imperative that the rights and dignity of individuals, including traditional rulers, are respected and upheld in accordance with the rule of law.
