On Saturday, it was reported security officials arrested 16 gunmen suspected to be affiliated with the Yoruba Nation for allegedly invading the Oyo State government secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan.

The agitators, dressed in military camouflage, reportedly engaged security officers in a gun duel before being apprehended. They also allegedly removed the Nigerian national flag at the secretariat and replaced it with their “Oodua Nation flag” before security officials intervened.

Some of the agitators attempted to flee and were pursued into nearby bushes and forests.

Sunday Igboho, a prominent figure associated with the Yoruba Nation movement, stated through his media aide, Olayemi Koiki, that he was unaware of the group’s activities or their motives for the invasion.

“I know nothing about it and don’t know who is behind it. If we want to organize a rally or any Yoruba Nation activity, we usually make an announcement beforehand,” Igboho said. “Any person who claims to be agitating for Yoruba Nation and goes to attack government facilities is acting independently. I have no involvement with this.”

Former leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, Akintoye, also distanced himself from the incident, stating, “I have spoken to Sunday Igboho. Some people were sent to disrupt the Yoruba self-determination struggle. We in this struggle do not act in this manner.”

In response, the Nigerian Army urged the public to remain calm and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies. The Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that troops are actively tracking the fleeing agitators, and the situation is under control.

The statement reassured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of the general area.
