The drama surrounding former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello continues to unfold. This week, a female police officer, who served as his aide-de-camp (ADC), along with other officers assigned to him, found themselves under arrest. The explosive accusation? They allegedly obstructed the attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest Bello at his Abuja residence.

The officers are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abuja. Sources within the police department claim the arrests stem from an order by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, who directed their immediate withdrawal from their duties protecting Bello.

These anonymous sources allege the officers were apprehended because they’re suspected of deliberately helping Bello evade arrest by EFCC operatives. The anti-graft agency reportedly arrived at Bello’s home on Wednesday with the intention of taking him into custody.

Intensifying the situation, the IGP, on Thursday, ordered the removal of all police officers assigned to the former governor. This move signifies a potential shift in the power dynamic surrounding Bello’s case.

Further complicating matters, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has placed Bello on a watchlist for alleged offenses, including conspiracy, breach of trust, and money laundering. This action restricts his movements, potentially preventing him from leaving the country.

The document placing Bello on the watchlist was signed by the Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration and circulated to various government agencies, including Customs, the police, State Security Services, and the National Internet Agency.

The situation remains fluid, with questions lingering. Did the security detail truly assist Bello in escaping arrest, or were they simply following orders? Only time and a thorough investigation will provide definitive answers. As the case unfolds, Nigerians are watching closely, eager to see how this saga involving the former governor will ultimately conclude.
