Naomi Osaka signaled her growing comfort on clay as she secured her first victory on the surface since 2022 at the Madrid Open on Wednesday. The Japanese former world number one, known for her prowess on hard courts, expressed her newfound appreciation for the red dirt after defeating Belgian lucky loser Greet Minnen 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

Osaka’s triumph marks just her fourth win on clay since 2021, showcasing her determination to adapt to the surface. Speaking to reporters in Madrid, the 26-year-old revealed her evolving mindset, stating, “I’ve had several ‘incidents’ on clay but I’m embracing it a lot more now.” She emphasized finding beauty in the challenges of clay and drawing inspiration from successful players on the surface.

In her match on Wednesday, Osaka displayed improved movement and shot execution, particularly noting her ability to slide to her forehand and handle her opponent’s drop shots effectively. Reflecting on her performance, Osaka expressed optimism about her continued progress on clay, aiming to capitalize on her newfound comfort and momentum.

The victory holds significance for Osaka, especially considering the upcoming Olympic Games, where clay will be the playing surface at Roland Garros this summer. With the Olympics as a major goal, Osaka is motivated to excel on clay and earn a spot in the prestigious event.

Meanwhile, fellow former US Open champion Emma Raducanu faced disappointment as she fell to Argentinian qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle in straight sets. However, 2016 US Open champion Sloane Stephens continued her clay court success with a hard-fought win against Martina Trevisan. On the other hand, home favorite Paula Badosa suffered an early exit, losing to Spanish qualifier Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Osaka’s triumph in Madrid not only marks a personal milestone but also signals her growing adaptability and determination to excel on all surfaces as she continues her quest for success in the tennis world.
