Super Eagles Head Coach Finidi George Leaves Captaincy Decision to Players

Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has announced that the players will be responsible for selecting the new captain of the Nigerian national team. This decision comes as the team’s former captain, Ahmed Musa, remains clubless and is not expected to continue his international career.

Musa’s deputy, William Troost-Ekong, has led the Super Eagles in most of their recent matches. Additionally, Kenneth Omeruo, an experienced centre-back and the most senior member of the current squad, is also a strong contender for the captaincy.

Despite calls for George to follow in the footsteps of previous head coach Sunday Oliseh, who personally selected his team captain, George is taking a different approach. During a media tour, he emphasized the importance of the players’ choice in determining their leader.

“It’s not my responsibility to pick a captain; it’s the responsibility of the team,” George stated. “People said Sunday Oliseh picked his captain and Finidi George should do the same, but I believe the players should decide who they are comfortable with and who will wear the captain’s armband.”

This democratic approach aims to ensure that the new captain is someone the players trust and feel confident in as a leader on and off the pitch. As the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming fixtures, the selection of a new captain will be a significant step in shaping the team’s future.
