The Rivers State Police Command has reported that motor mechanic Chukwudi Okereke, a 34 year old father of 3, who died in police custody after being arrested by the Octopus Strike Force unit in Port Harcourt, was implicated in the kidnapping of a female business tycoon in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt on September 7, 2023. Despite the family’s claim of torture during Chukwudi’s detention at the Police Unit following his arrest, the police countered, asserting that the suspect was involved in kidnapping and cult activities, refuting the allegation of torture.

As per the Rivers State Police Command, Chukwudi Okereke Abraham was allegedly involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult activities. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko revealed that the deceased was implicated in the abduction of a businesswoman in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt in 2023. The victim was reportedly held for a week and released after a ransom of ₦3.5 million was paid. In a statement issued on Saturday, Iringe-Koko stated, “Investigations revealed that the deceased was a member of the Dey-Gbam secret cult gang.” The police maintain that Chukwudi was not tortured and emphasize their commitment to a transparent investigation.

During a joint news briefing with the Rivers State Civil Society Organisation, Abraham Okereke, the father of the deceased, stated that his son is not a criminal. He mentioned that despite the police initially denying holding his son in custody after his arrest, his remains were later discovered at the University of Port Harcourt.

He said: “On January 11, I got a call in Choba informing me of my son’s arrest. I thought it was routine, but later realized there was more to it. My son is a mechanic.

“His brother assured me he’d return safely. Two days later at the Octopus Unit, they turned us away. We visited several police stations but got no answers.

“When they brought my son to his shop, they found nothing but still took him away. Every attempt to get information was rejected. Finally, a policeman told me I’d never see my son again because I’m powerless.

“I plead with the Nigerian and Rivers State governments, even the governor, for help. With the aid of civil society, I found my son’s hidden remains.”

The chairman of the State CSO voiced dissatisfaction with the police’s handling of the case, which lasted four months, and urged for the apprehension and legal action against all officers implicated in the mechanic’s death.
