If you haven’t heard of Bridgeton, you’ve probably been living under a rock. I am not talking about Daphne Bridgeton or Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. We’re way past that now; it’s all about Colin Bridgeton and Penelope Featherington, also known as Polin. Luke Newton, the English actor who plays Colin Bridgeton in the Netflix hit series, captured the audience with his charming personality. Watching each scene in Bridgeton Season 3, it is clear that a great deal of effort has gone into making the film a success, and it also comes down to the characters working on themselves to match their respective roles.
Luke Newton admits that in season 2 of Bridgeton, he would eat anything on set because the character he was portraying was a big “foodie”. However, when he got the call that he was going to lead the upcoming season of the series, he was determined to change his lifestyle “slightly” and get his energy levels up. In the first script, Luke sees Benedict’s line that says “under what foreign sun did you apparently get so sturdy.” This made Luke realize how much Colin had changed, so he decided to dive in and present the character in the best way possible. But how did he do that?
Taking The Dietary Approach
If you’re familiar with Dhar Mann’s short films on YouTube, you’ve probably heard this one too many times: “it’s not about what’s on the outside, it’s about what’s on the inside that counts.” That applies to this situation. Most people take an external or physical approach to transforming themselves, and while that has been proven to be a success with anecdotal evidence, being conscious of what you put in your body is just as important.
Meal Prepping
For Luke, he took the dietary approach. The first thing Luke did was to look into a meal prepping company. Eating healthy doesn’t always have to be a drag. You don’t have to have broccoli or couscous every single day. While Luke was looking to create a healthy lifestyle, he wasn’t about to trade the quality of his food for a boring and less tasty healthy meal. There are a variety of foods you can pick from that are actually healthy, but you need to do your research and find which one works for you. For Luke, he would have rice, chicken, and broccoli, with some sort of sauce by the side.
Fruits and Protein
Luke doesn’t joke about his avocados, he has avocados on most days. If you’re not so much of an avocado eater, you’ll probably be scrunching up your nose thinking of the possibility of eating an avocado. One fun fact about this superfood is that it is good for gut health.
However, there are other fruits that promote gut health like bananas, apples, pears, berries etc. Other things Luke eats on a regular basis are eggs and meat.
Intermittent Fasting
The next dietary approach is intermittent fasting. Luke doesn’t have his first meal of the day until around lunchtime. After lunch, he then has dinner and calls it a day. This type of intermittent fasting is called the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting. Basically, in this method you fast for 16 hours and then eat in between the next 8 hours.
However, fasting for 16 hours is not an impossible task, when you sleep you have successfully started your fasting. All you need to do is hold on tight till your fasting period has reached the minimum of 16 hours in a day. “Snacks are just never going to help,” Luke says. He ditched snacks and focused on eating healthy meals which allowed his body to recover.
What Does a Day of Eating On Set Look Like For Luke Newton?
Filming Bridgeton season 3 was a different experience for Luke than the previous seasons because he was to play a lead role. “I would have a protein shake in the morning with a banana,” Luke said. This little fix got him through several hours of the morning until lunchtime. The next thing he has are prepped meals that typically contain a lot of meat, vegetables and a small portion of carbohydrates (rice, pasta, or potatoes).
It was a filming set for Bridgeton and best believe that there was a lot of food to go around, even a second dish and a dessert. But for Luke, it was all about portion control. His favorite dessert on set was “crumble”. To him, this snack was a treat. He’d have “a crumble or a cinnamon social” at night anytime he had an intimacy scene. These were his little secrets to not making dieting and training such a chore.
Did Luke Newton Workout For Bridgerton Season 3?
While Luke went with the dietary approach, he did work on his body to stay fit. He trained every evening after filming on set. When he gets back home, he starts his workout with a run. Luke ran 5 kilometers almost everyday. But he didn’t just run 5 km at once, he’d alternate between running 1 km and walking 1 km until he had reached the mark of 5 km. After he has gotten his cardio in, he does weight training with his upper body being his main focus.
Bottom Line
Filming Bridgeton Season 3 required a lot of work from the producers, cinematographers, to the actors and actresses, and the chefs on set. It was an inclusive production and the characters went out of their way to make sure they portrayed the characters to their best capacity. Just like the likes of Luke Newton who took the dietary approach of transforming himself into Colin Bridgeton. What do you think about Luke’s diet? Would you be trying any of his tips?
