Hi-Tech reported that certain media managers are organizing to guarantee laws that will not only safeguard the data that journalists painstakingly obtained, but also compel AI to pay for any data it may unintentionally scrape.

“AI is in the corporate world just like us. Therefore, we cannot allow AI to steal vital data from us in the guise of providing free knowledge.

Legislation governing AI activities is now being developed, with a focus on preventing it from obtaining our personal data without permission.

“We advise every media organization that appreciates the data it has diligently sourced to establish firewalls around that data in the interim before this takes effect. AI’s stock in trade is stealing them without permission and passing them off as original works, they continued.

The NCC upholds its tech neutrality

On the other hand, sources within the nation’s regulators of technology and communications, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), claimed tech neutrality and did not know of any plans to regulate AI.

“We are technology neutral and have repeatedly said we don’t have any intention to regulate any technology that brings innovation,” stated a trustworthy NCC source who wished to remain anonymous.

Some businesspeople and users of AI believe that regulation in general can hinder technological growth and creativity.

They examine the different business opportunities AI can create in different economic areas and vehemently contend that regulating the technology will impede these opportunities.

Why this matters

According to Mr. Olusegun Enitan Dada, Managing Director of IT Horizons, the combination of AI and machine learning signifies a paradigm change in the way businesses function in Nigeria.

These technologies provide practical answers to challenging issues in a variety of industries, not simply theoretical ones.

Being a leading digital innovation IT company, we are aware of the revolutionary potential of AI and machine learning algorithms for process optimization, data analysis, and the generation of actionable insights that will drive Nigerian businesses into the future.

What they’re saying

Content creator Gideon Ekeoba characterised the attempt as needless concern by those whom artificial intelligence has most benefited. He declared:

“For content creators like me, artificial intelligence (AI) is a useful tool that has improved my skills. I also know that digital media and journalism have been greatly touched by technology, which has given rise to technologies that improve many facets of the field. Even when technological advancements benefit our cause, needless fear of them is the downfall of this portion of the world.

Bottom Line

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to perform tasks that were previously regarded as requiring human intelligence. Learning, logic, and problem solving are only a few examples.

Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, is the development of methods that allow computers to learn from data without having to be explicitly programmed, hence increasing their performance over time.
