About three persons have lost their lives in the aftermath of the collapse of a mining pit in the Adunu community in Paikoro Local Government Area, Niger State.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba’arah, had via a statement, confirmed the death of three persons and the rescue of one person in the community.

The DG had added that all those entrapped were rescued from the pit following community efforts.

This recently collapsed mining site had according to reports, been an illegal mining site that drew mostly women and children from the community.

Earlier, the state Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Yusuf Shuaibu, had informed news men that the pit had collapsed around 10 am, entrapping an unconfirmed number of workers inside.
Shuaibu also added that the association had mobilised a team for on-the-spot assessment of the scene of the incident with help from the government of Niger State.

Why It Matters

This latest mining pit collapse in Niger is a stark reminder of the ongoing safety crisis plaguing the region’s artisanal mining industry. This time around, three lives were tragically lost, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and improved safety protocols in these mines.

This incident demands immediate action from the relevant authorities to guarantee safer working conditions for the residents and protect those whose livelihood depends on working in these mines.
