“Football Was Merciless Tonight”: Modric Reflects on Croatia’s Euro 2024 Heartbreak

Croatia’s captain, Luka Modric, encapsulated the nation’s heartbreak with the words, “Football was merciless tonight.” The 38-year-old spoke after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Italy in their final Group B match on Monday, a result that likely spells the end of Croatia’s campaign.

Held in Los Angeles, the match saw Croatia take the lead in the 61st minute through their ever-reliable captain. Modric converted the rebound after his initial penalty was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, putting Croatia in a promising position. However, their hopes were dashed in the dying moments of the game when Italy’s Mattia Zaccagni equalized with a sublime strike deep into stoppage time.

Reflecting on the bitter draw, Modric said, “That was very stressful. We kept battling right until the end but, unfortunately, football was merciless with us tonight. It was cruel above all today but also in our last match against Albania when we also conceded a late goal.”

Despite the disappointment, Modric, who has 178 caps and an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, hinted at his desire to keep playing. “I’d like to keep playing forever but there probably will come a time when I must hang up my boots. I’ll keep playing on, but I don’t know for how much longer,” he confessed, showcasing his enduring passion for the game.

The draw leaves Croatia third in Group B with just two points, placing their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages in jeopardy. Yet, Modric remained proud of his team’s effort and spirit. “We really fought for Croatia right from the first whistle till the last and the result is what it is. The footballing gods don’t necessarily always smile on us, but we should be proud of the way that we represented our country tonight.”

As Croatia faces the likely end of their Euro 2024 campaign, Modric’s reflections highlight both the agony and the relentless beauty of football. His words resonate with a nation that has seen its fair share of highs and lows, reminding fans that in football, as in life, there are no guarantees, only the pride in knowing you gave your all.
