Official Statement from the Nigerian Air Force

In an official statement released on Monday, NAF spokesman Edward Gabkwet clarified that the incident involved an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), not a helicopter as previously reported. Gabkwet explained that the UAV experienced a mishap shortly after takeoff during a mission near Rumji Village, approximately 15 kilometers from the base. He assured the public that since the vehicle was unmanned, there were no casualties either on board or on the ground.

Gabkwet added that a preliminary investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the UAV mishap. He emphasized that this minor setback would not affect ongoing operations.

Contradicting Reports from Locals

Contrary to the NAF’s statement, residents reported that a helicopter belonging to the NAF crashed in Tami village, causing alarm among the community. According to these accounts, the helicopter encountered technical difficulties during a routine operational flight, leading to the crash. However, the pilot successfully emerged from the crash unscathed after applying some emergency protocols.

Emergency Response

Following the incident, a team of Air Force personnel from the Nigerian Air Force Air Training Centre and 401 Flying School reportedly secured the crash site for emergency rescue operations and further investigation.

Bottom Line

While initial reports from locals indicated a helicopter crash, the Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that the incident involved a UAV with no casualties. An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the mishap, and the NAF remains committed to maintaining its operational capabilities.
