Presidency and Peter Obi Clash Over Planned Nationwide Protest

The presidency and the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, Peter Obi, are at odds over the “End Bad Governance” protest gaining traction on social media. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga accused the Labour Party and Obi of orchestrating the protest to draw President Bola Tinubu’s attention to Nigeria’s current economic situation.

On Saturday, Onanuga alleged, “Don’t be fooled: the malcontents planning to stage nationwide protests are supporters of Peter Obi, the failed presidential candidate of the Labour Party. And he should be held responsible for whatever crisis emanates from the action.” He further stated that the economy is improving and inflation is slowing, noting, “There is no country in the world where people are not going through some economic challenges and where the cost of living is not a major issue.”

Onanuga called on security agents to “interrogate these agents of destabilisation.”

Labour Party’s Response

In response, Labour Party spokesman Obiora Ifoh denied Onanuga’s allegations, stating that “there is no truth in that and the tweet is just the author’s figment of his imagination.” He emphasized that the Labour Party is known for its peaceful stance and has always urged its followers to maintain peace.

“It is therefore delusional for anyone to link our supporters to the planned protest. Labour Party, Peter Obi, and our supporters are not planning any protests,” Ifoh declared. He pointed out that peaceful protests worldwide are initiated by the people, not by the opposition, and criticized the government for trying to blame others for Nigeria’s poor governance.

“Nigeria can still get it right if the right policies are initiated. We also advise that some aides of the presidency must be cautioned to avoid incendiary pronouncements capable of combusting the nation, all in the name of playing politics,” Ifoh added.

Planned Protest Against Economic Hardship

The protest, aimed at addressing economic hardship, is set to take place across all states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August. Nigerians have been facing severe inflation and economic challenges, exacerbated by the government’s removal of petrol subsidies and unification of forex windows.

Government’s Warning

In response to the planned demonstration, the Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives, has issued warnings against the protest.

Bottom Line

The clash between the presidency and the Labour Party underscores the deepening tensions in Nigeria over economic issues. As the planned protest approaches, both sides continue to exchange accusations, highlighting the need for careful management of the situation to prevent further unrest.
