The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it conducted a targeted strike in Beirut against the Hezbollah commander believed to be responsible for a recent attack in the Golan Heights.

This attack in the Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers, escalating tensions in the Middle East. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a plume of smoke rising from the southern suburbs, a known Hezbollah stronghold, at 7:40 p.m. local time (1640 GMT).

IDF Statement and Civil Defense

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strike in a statement, stating that it was aimed at the commander responsible for the deaths in Majdal Shams and other Israeli civilian casualties. The IDF noted that no new civil defense instructions were issued for Israel following the strike. Israel is not preparing for a war with Hezbollah but is specifically targeting the commander, as indicated by one of its coalition allies Netanyahu.

Uncertainty Surrounding Commander’s Fate

However, a senior Lebanese security source indicated that the fate of the targeted commander remained unclear. Lebanon’s state-run national news agency reported that the strike targeted an area near Hezbollah’s Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Beirut.

Context and Blame

Beirut has been on high alert in anticipation of possible Israeli retaliation for the attack on the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Flights into the city have been suspended as public concerns grow. The outcome of this recent strike on Hezbollah is yet to be seen, with Iran warning against any Israeli strike on the group. However, there is hope for a truce, and the outcome will determine whether there will be escalated tension and a broader war in the Middle East.
