Japan’s Proposals and Commitments

In a press statement by the Third Secretary, Culture and Information/General/Protocol Section, Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Shimada Mami, Ms. Yoko expressed her appreciation for the constructive dialogues that took place during her visit to Nigeria in April 2024. Noting that her visit to Nigeria in April, prompted her proposal for new initiatives grounded in the Women, Peace, and Security framework due to the challenges faced by internally displaced women. These initiatives aim to address the specific needs of this vulnerable group.

Additionally, Ms. Yoko emphasized Japan’s interest in fostering stronger economic ties with Nigeria, including support for start-ups. This is part of a broader effort to enhance the partnership between the two nations. She reiterated Japan’s commitment to collaborating with Nigeria on addressing global challenges, praising Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and the shared democratic values that bind both countries.

Nigeria’s Response and Future Cooperation

Ambassador Tuggar responded positively to the proposals and recognized the progress made through the TICAD process. He expressed his gratitude for Japan’s continued support and conveyed Nigeria’s eagerness to further strengthen both bilateral and regional cooperation.

The meeting concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to deepening Japan-Nigeria relations as they look forward to the upcoming TICAD 9, scheduled for next year.

Conclusion

The meeting between Japan’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, marks a significant step towards strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations. With a focus on economic and business relationships that could boost Nigerian start-ups if thoroughly implemented.
