In a bid to bolster Ukraine’s defenses, President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that over $8 billion in military assistance will be provided to help Kyiv repel Russian invaders. This commitment coincides with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s critical visit to the White House to solicit U.S. support in ending the war in Ukraine.
New Weaponry
The aid package includes the first shipment of the Joint Standoff Weapon, a precision-guided glide bomb with a range of up to 81 miles (130 km). This medium-range missile significantly upgrades Ukraine’s capabilities, enabling safer strikes on Russian forces from a distance. The bomb can be deployed from fighter jets and is designed for high-accuracy targeting.
Restrictions on Missile Use
Despite the military assistance, the White House clarified that U.S. missiles will not be used to target deeper areas in Russia. A U.S. official confirmed, “Biden will not announce that Washington would let Ukraine use U.S. missiles to hit targets deeper in Russia.”
Commitment to Ukraine
President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating it is a “U.S. priority.” He announced a surge in security assistance and additional actions aimed at helping Ukraine win the war.
Allocation of Funds
The bulk of the new aid, $5.5 billion, is to be allocated before the end of the U.S. fiscal year, when funding authority is set to expire. An additional $2.4 billion is earmarked under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, allowing the administration to procure weapons for Ukraine from companies instead of drawing from U.S. stockpiles. This will enhance Ukraine’s air defense, unmanned aerial systems, and air-to-ground munitions.
Enhanced Training and Support
As part of the assistance plan, the Defense Department will refurbish and provide an additional Patriot air defense battery and more missiles. Biden has also ordered the Pentagon to expand training for Ukrainian F-16 pilots, including support for an additional 18 pilots next year.
Zelenskiy’s Gratitude
President Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to Biden and the U.S. Congress for the military aid package, assuring that Ukraine would utilize it “in the most efficient and transparent manner.” He highlighted the importance of the support, particularly the Patriot battery, drones, and long-range missiles, in protecting the Ukrainian people.
