Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has spoken about the difficulties he has faced over the years despite becoming widely known for his portrayal of the iconic character Papa Ajasco.
Ayoyinka made the revelation during a conversation with media personality Lucky Udu, where he explained that legal restrictions surrounding the character have limited his ability to benefit from the fame it brought him.
According to the actor, the character Papa Ajasco is officially registered by Wale Adenuga and his production company, which means he cannot freely use the identity for personal appearances or commercial engagements without permission.

He said many organisations are interested in featuring him in adverts and campaigns, but usually want him to appear in the well-known costume and persona associated with the character.
“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me,” he said.
The actor further explained that he does not have the legal rights to use the name or costume linked to the character.
“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume,” he said.
Ayoyinka added that the public’s strong identification of him with the role has made it difficult for people to see him beyond the famous character.
“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it.”
The veteran actor also revealed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.
Reflecting on his personal circumstances, Ayoyinka said life has been challenging in recent years.
“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people,” he said.
“I’m always thinking every day. Look at my home—I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car.”
Ayoyinka gained nationwide recognition for his role in the long-running television comedy Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga Productions, which became one of Nigeria’s most beloved comedy series.
