A PAL Airlines aircraft, operating as Air Canada flight AC2259, turned an ordinary flight into a nightmare when it was forced to execute an emergency landing at Halifax Airport due to a landing gear malfunction. The incident, which unfolded around 9:30 PM AT, left passengers shaken and social media buzzing with comparisons to more tragic aviation disasters. While no casualties were reported, the tragic experience is raising questions about the reliability of aircraft maintenance and the aviation industry’s commitment to safety.
The aircraft skidded along the pavement, with its wings scraping the runway and a fire igniting during the landing. Passengers described the ordeal as terrifying, with one, Nikki Valentine, recounting the sheer panic onboard.
“The plane started to sit at about a 20-degree angle to the left, and as that happened, we heard a pretty loud what almost sounded like a crash sound, as the wing of the plane started to skid along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine,” she told CBC News.
Footage of the incident quickly went viral, showing flames and smoke as the plane struggled to come to a halt. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, evacuating passengers and ensuring no lives were lost. According to reports, one of the aircraft’s tires failed to deploy properly, causing the tilt and skid that sent shockwaves through the cabin.
“The plane shook quite a bit, and we started seeing fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming in the windows,” another passenger described.
The airport confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that all passengers were safely evacuated and examined by paramedics. However, the ordeal didn’t just end there, it triggered alot of reactions online. Some users expressed relief that no lives were lost, while others criticized the aviation industry for what they saw as a near-catastrophe waiting to happen. “Unbelievable. Thankfully it landed with everyone surviving, it appears,” one user commented.
Social media users drew parallels between this incident and a deadly crash in South Korea just days earlier. In that tragedy, a flight from Thailand to Muan International Airport veered off the runway and burst into flames, claiming 120 lives.
The airport was temporarily closed on Saturday night, though one runway was reopened shortly after. But the reopening doesn’t erase the lingering questions, How does a malfunction like this occur? Was it a failure in routine maintenance, or an helpless accident? The aviation industry, often celebrated for its high safety standards, seems to be facing an unsettling series of incidents lately. Each one chips away at the confidence of travelers who, quite reasonably, expect to land safely at their destinations.
