From BIG BANG reuniting during the ceremony to give a surprise performance, to aespa winning six awards, the 2024 MAMA Awards edition will go down in Asian history as the award show with the most highlights yet!
Of course I can’t forget to include the event criticism, social media outrage, and the vote rigging allegations over two popular K-pop groups; ITZY and ENHYPEN.
Is your curiosity piqued yet? Don’t fret, you’re in the right place. This article will fill you in on the fine dressing and the trends spotted from the just concluded 2024 edition of a much rated award ceremony in Asia; The MAMA Award.
The MAMA Awards
Since its launch in South Korea in 1999, the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) has become a significant event in the music industry. While K-pop artists frequently take prominence during the event, the awards also shines a spotlight on other Asian talents, honoring them with categories such as Best Asian Artist and various industry-specific accolades.
For this year’s event, the 2024 MAMA Awards ceremony was hosted in the U.S for the first time ever and it spanned three days, making it a significant milestone for the ceremony since both established and upcoming K-pop artists were showcased.
The Red Carpet Glam
The red carpet was a brilliant display of style and creativity, with our favorite Asian celebrities bringing their A-game to the ceremony. Here are some of the looks that stood out to me:
A. Rosé from BLACKPINK: The APT crooner stunned in a sleek, black velvet gown with a dramatic train, which she paired with diamond accessories that added just the right amount of sparkle.
B. aespa: The ‘Supernova’ singers had donned on futuristic, metallic outfits that perfectly matched the high-energy performances for which they are noted for. In case you don’t fully get the picture, think silver, holographic fabrics, and bold makeup looks.
C. SEVENTEEN: This boy group coordinated in chic, monochromatic suits but each member put a unique spin to the co-ord look with different cuts and accessories tailored to the individual.
The Trends Spotted
Several trends had seemingly reoccurred in an almost pattern-like manner during the awards. Some of them include:
– Bold Colors: Bright, bold colors like electric blue, fiery red, and neon green were the eye catching colors at the event, standing out against the more traditional black and white ensembles.
– Metallics and Sequins: Shiny fabrics were everywhere, from suits to dresses. This trend added a touch of glamor and pop star vibes to the event.
– Statement Accessories: Large earrings, chunky necklaces, and statement belts were popular accessories that added an extra layer of style to many celebrity outfits.
The Best Dressed Stars
A. Bruno Mars: This 15-time Grammy Awards winner had kept it classic yet stylish with a white tailored tuxedo, complete with a black belt with a gold design on the head and patent leather shoes.
B. BIBI: She turned heads in a vibrant, asymmetrical dress that featured animal print patterns and black, thigh-high lace tights, perfectly showcasing her edgy style.
C. Hooyeon: Hoyeon stepped into the red caroet wearing a sleeveless, black gown. Since the gown was a bit flowy, she accesoriesed with with a black statement belt on the waist and a black bow clipped to her ponytail hair.
