The 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards, AMAA, lit up Lagos on November 2, 2024, as African filmmakers, actors, and guests converged in celebration of the continent’s cinematic best. Held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, the fully packed event featured performances by Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti and honored 26 winners across categories.
Hosting top awards for the night were Nigeria’s The Weekend by Daniel Oriahi and Jagun Jagun by Femi Adebayo, while South Africa took center stage with The Queenstown Kings. Special winners included Uganda’s The Last Shoe Maker, Best Short Film, and Mozambique’s The Night Still Smells of Gun Powder, Best Documentary.
Special guest and chief executive of the AMAA, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, paid a sobering tribute to the founder, the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, as he urged unity among creatives for the cause of the AMAA in its quest for global acknowledgement of African stories.
