In a recent development that has sparked subtle controversy, The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, members of the Tinubu/Shettima Independent Campaign Council have made a bold appeal to President Bola Tinubu for appointive federal positions. Their plea stems from their belief that their hard work and dedication were instrumental in securing electoral victory for Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima during the February 25 presidential polls in the state.
At a press briefing in Yenagoa, Pastor Joseph Fafi, a prominent APC chieftain and Director of Administration in the state’s Independent Campaign Council, emphasized that they should be seriously considered for appointments. Fafi raised concerns about some well-placed individuals both within and outside the state who, in his view, have been recommended for appointments despite contributing very little to the party’s success.
Drawing attention to their meticulous efforts, Fafi highlighted the organizational structure they established, extending down to the grassroots and polling units, to achieve the electoral results they had. He expressed disappointment in the past practice of appointing complete strangers to key positions instead of rewarding dedicated party members who actively toiled for the party’s success.
“It’s the party members that suffer at the end of the day. People delivered, that’s why we are here. Let them show their unit and ward results. For the avoidance of doubt, the activities of ICC in Bayelsa State are there on the internet for all to see.
“Those we campaigned to in creeks and villages are eagerly waiting for the fulfilment of promises that were made. We are therefore appealing to Mr. President to give priority to members of ICC in Bayelsa State in the ongoing recruitment process.”
While acknowledging the contributions of some individuals, particularly in Ogbia and Nembe Local Government Areas, Fafi underscored that the Independent Campaign Council played a significant role in securing victories across the state. He urged President Tinubu to prioritize party members who actively participated in the campaign, as this would avoid a repeat of past mistakes where appointees neglected the party’s interests.
Nevertheless, Fafi reaffirmed the ICC members’ unwavering support and loyalty to the Tinubu administration, expressing confidence in the president’s ability to make unbiased decisions in the appointment process.
Controversy arises, however, as this plea adds to the growing number of individuals and groups requesting political appointments. Critics argue that the trend of appealing for positions fosters an environment of favoritism and undermines the importance of competence and merit in governance. They fear that political positions might be granted based on personal connections rather than qualifications, hindering the development and progress of the country.
The situation has put President Tinubu in a delicate position, facing mounting demands and pressures from various quarters. Nigerians worry that such lobbying may compromise the selection process and hinder the appointment of truly competent individuals.
As the political landscape in Nigeria evolves, the debate over political appointments continues, raising questions about the criteria for selecting public officials and the implications it may have on Nigeria’s development. For now, the fate of those seeking appointments lies in the hands of President Tinubu, who will have to navigate through the complexities of balancing party loyalty, competence, and public expectations in his decision-making process.
