The Abuja Court of Appeal has denied the request by Rivers State lawmakers to reinstate them to their seats as lawmakers before the hearing of the appeal thus overturning the High Court’s decision declaring their seats vacant.
Martins Chike Amaewhule and 26 other members were removed from the Rivers State House of Assembly, a decision that was upheld by the High Court. The 27 legislators appealed, seeking to reverse the ruling and restore their positions.
In a virtual ruling on Friday, the Appellate Court stated that reversing the Federal High Court’s decision would amount to pre-judging the ongoing appeal. The three-member panel scheduled the appeal hearing for June 20.
The justices urged all parties to maintain the status quo and refrain from any hostilities until the matter is resolved.
