Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta lauded Bukayo Saka’s sharpened competitive spirit following their commanding 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, which further solidified their position in the Premier League title race. Saka’s penalty just before halftime, which took his league tally to 16 goals, showcased his newfound hunger for success, earning praise from his manager.
Arteta highlighted Saka’s evolution this season, noting a noticeable improvement in his effectiveness and competitiveness on the pitch. Despite Saka’s consistent performances last season, Arteta emphasized that the young midfielder has elevated his game to new heights, demonstrating a relentless desire to win.
“In the game, he has become more effective, I would say,” Arteta remarked to reporters. “I see a different edge on him. The way he competes, he loves winning more than three months ago, six months ago, a year ago, and that is something that now is hopefully in his system.”
While Saka’s goal provided a crucial breakthrough for Arsenal, Arteta also praised Declan Rice for his contribution, highlighting the midfielder’s versatility and adaptation to different positions since joining from West Ham United.
“We have changed his positions, and sometimes it is not easy for players to adapt to that, so I think he deserves a lot of credit,” Arteta acknowledged.
Arsenal’s victory propelled them to 83 points from 36 games, keeping the pressure on league leaders Manchester City, who trailed by four points with two games in hand. The Gunners’ solid defensive display against Bournemouth marked their 15th clean sheet of the season, with goalkeeper David Raya securing the prestigious Premier League “golden glove” award.
Arteta’s decision to bring in Raya on loan earlier in the season, replacing the popular Aaron Ramsdale, initially drew criticism from fans. However, Arteta emphasized the significance of a strong defensive foundation in Arsenal’s pursuit of trophies and titles.
“It gives us a huge foundation to be closer to winning trophies and winning titles,” Arteta affirmed, underscoring the importance of defensive stability in the team’s success.
