Nigeria International striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said to be in an induced coma to help him recover after he had emergency surgery on Monday evening. The 27-year-old Nigerian player got hurt during Forest’s exciting 2-2 tie with Leicester City on Sunday.
Awoniyi hit the goalpost near the end of the game and got treatment for a long time before doctors said he could keep playing. But when doctors checked him again on Monday, they found out his injury was bad and he needed surgery right away.
The situation is serious, but people close to The City Ground say Awoniyi’s life is not in danger. Doctors put him in the induced coma to keep him from moving and to control his heart rate while he gets better.
Forest put out a first statement on Tuesday afternoon saying Awoniyi was “recovering well.” The club pointed to how bad the striker’s injury was to explain why owner Evangelos Marinakis reacted so after the match. This came as people were saying he had faced off with manager Nuno Espírito Santo near the sideline – claims the club called “fake news.”
We should hear more about how Awoniyi is doing in the next few days.
