Folarin Balogun capped his FIFA World Cup debut by bagging a brace and helping the United States secure a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of the 2026 tournament.
The 24-year-old striker was the star of the show as the Americans celebrated their biggest-ever goal total in a World Cup match in what has been a historic night.
Balogun’s switch to represent the USA national side has once again captured the attention of the nation following his decisive performance. Born in New York in 2001 to Nigerian parents residing in England, Balogun was only welcomed into the United States due to his mother, Florence, missing her scheduled flight home to London as she was heavily pregnant.
After coming through the youth academy at Arsenal and representing England at youth level, Balogun switched his international allegiance to the United States in 2023 and has gone on to become an integral part of the nation’s side since.
The striker has stated how pleased he is with his decision after the triumph and thanked his American fans for the backing he has received.
“I just want to continue to show the fans I made the right decision,” declared Balogun.
The striker’s impressive display also comes amid ongoing legal battles involving the concept of birthright citizenship in the USA; however, it seems any future Supreme Court ruling may have no effect on his eligibility to represent the USA at present.
