President Joe Biden is expected to announce a sweeping student loan forgiveness program in the coming weeks. The program, which could forgive the debt of millions of federal student loan borrowers, is seen as a key campaign promise for the Biden administration.
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Spring 2024 Unified Agenda, the final rule on student loan relief is set to be published in October. However, higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz notes that the department could act sooner by publishing a notice in the Federal Register, potentially allowing the program to take effect as early as July 2025.
The move is seen as a sharp partisan issue, with conservatives questioning the fairness of forgiving debt for those who have benefited from higher education, while progressives argue that it is a necessary step to address the growing student debt crisis. The Biden administration has already made significant changes to the student loan system, and a spokesperson for the Education Department emphasized the administration’s commitment to providing relief to as many borrowers as possible, as quickly as possible.
“The Biden administration has already made historic changes to a broken student loan system,” said a spokesperson for the Education Department. “This administration is committed to providing relief to as many borrowers as possible, as quickly as possible, and these regulatory efforts would help provide tens of millions more borrowers with financial breathing room.”
In response to the expected announcement, Ryan Walker, executive vice president of Heritage Action for America, stated, “We are proud to stand with taxpayers in demanding the Biden administration abandon plans to force all Americans to take on the debt of a select few, something the Supreme Court has already deemed unconstitutional.”
