Black Stars Set to Host AFCON 2025 Qualifiers in Nigeria After CAF Rejects Baba Yara Stadium

The Black Stars are set to play in Nigeria all their remaining 2025 AFCON home qualifiers after the CAF has rejected the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The inspection team from the CAF highlighted, among other things, poor drainage, playing surfaces that were even, and insufficient grass cover, hence not a good venue to host competitive matches. Two other stadiums in Ghana-the Cape Coast and the Accra Sports Stadium-failed in the tests, which means Ghana has no approved venue for the forthcoming qualifiers.

For this reason, CAF instructed Ghana to find another venue outside the country for their crucial Matchday 3 and 4 qualifiers in October. It is reported that Nigeria’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, with its 30,000 capacity, has become the most likely option owing to proximity and suitability.

Other stadiums under consideration include Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny of Côte d’Ivoire, Japoma Stadium of Cameroon, and Berkane Municipal Stadium of Morocco.

With the International break over and returning next month, a final decision is expected in the coming days from the Ghana Football Association.
