Nine-time Copa America champions and 2021 runners-up Brazil were held to a surprising goalless draw by Costa Rica, the second-lowest ranked team in the tournament. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Brazil could not break down Costa Rica’s resilient defense in their opening match at the 2024 Copa America in Los Angeles.

Brazil’s dominance was evident from the start. Within the first seven minutes, Raphinha tested Costa Rican goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira with a sharp shot at his near post. Shortly after, Rodrygo’s effort narrowly missed the target, skimming just wide of the post. These early chances set the tone for a match where Brazil was clearly the aggressor.

Raphinha continued to pose a threat, but Sequeira repeatedly rose to the occasion, keeping Costa Rica in the game. The Central American side, yet to register a shot on target, relied heavily on their keeper and defensive organization to weather Brazil’s relentless attacks.

Brazil thought they had finally broken the deadlock around the 30-minute mark when Marquinhos slotted the ball into the net at the back post. However, VAR intervened, ruling out the goal for offside as Rodrygo was marginally ahead of the last defender, much to Brazil’s frustration.

The second half mirrored the first, with Brazil in control and pressing for a goal. Lucas Paqueta came agonizingly close just past the hour mark, unleashing a powerful strike from distance that beat Sequeira but struck the right post.

In a bid to find the elusive goal, manager Dorival Junior introduced young talents Endrick and Savio with twenty minutes remaining. Despite the fresh legs and continued pressure, Brazil’s efforts went unrewarded. By the final whistle, Brazil had taken 18 shots compared to Costa Rica’s three but had to settle for a goalless draw.

The draw leaves Brazil with a single point as they prepare to face Paraguay in their next match. Paraguay, coming off a 2-1 loss to Colombia earlier in the evening, will also be looking to bounce back. Brazil’s inability to capitalize on their dominance will be a key focus as they seek to secure their first win of the tournament.
