The reports on the redesigning of the 200, 500, and 1000 naria notes are about to get real, as Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the central bank of Nigeria during the Monetary Policy meeting on Tuesday, announced that President Mohammadu Buhari will Unveil the new naira notes on Wednesday.
According to Godwin Emefiele, from now till the deadline January 31 is enough for anyone to deposit their notes in the bank, considering that the banks are to be in operation from Monday to Saturday.
He further disclosed, that they’ve shifted the date for the unveiling of the new notes, from Dec 15 to November 23rd, which the President has readily accepted to Unveil the new currencies.
He said, “100 days is enough for any person from any part of Nigeria to deposit his money in the bank and get his money when the new notes are released.
“For information, indeed, we are no longer waiting till December 15th to unveil and begin to release the new notes.
“By the special grace of God, tomorrow, which is the 23rd of November 2022, the President has graciously accepted to unveil the new currencies and the new currencies will be unveiled tomorrow at the Federal Executive Chamber by 10 am.”
The old notes will remain legal tender until January 31st, so banks have been ordered to operate from Monday to Saturday and to make sure they do not charge anything for deposits.
Nigerians have been advised to take the old notes to the bank and not hoard it, because as of January 31st the old notes will no longer have legal tender.
Many Nigerians have gone online to criticize the decision of the FG to redesign the naira notes, as they feel that there are too many problems in Nigeria, and changing the old currencies is not part of them
