The African Football Confederation (CAF), after a long week of uncertainty about the theme of the game, has at last decided to reschedule the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco from March to July, August.
The tournament was scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, but now CAF has decided that the finals will be held from July 25 to August 16, 2026. Per the announcement of the association, CAF disclosed that the matter was discussed with FIFA and also with other stakeholders before they took the step to change it.
A press release issued by the Confederation of African Football states that fixing a later date is a means to a more effective arrangement, and in addition, teams will have ample time for their preparations.

Besides Africa, the tournament will also be the continent’s gate to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with four teams receiving automatic qualification and two other sides going forward to the intercontinental playoffs.
This season, the finals will see 16 teams battling it out for the championship for the very first time in the tournament’s history. The Nigerian women’s national football team has been our champions since the last time they won the title. Besides them, we will also be seeing the South Africa women’s national football team, who are the former champions, and the Ghana women’s national football team, who came third in the last tournament.
It is the hosts, Morocco women’s national football team, through their preparations for the staging of the tournament and the most recent development in investment in women’s football, that have led to the African Cup.
