The Federal High Court in Lagos State has directed the Delta State Government to make an account for its 200 billion Naira education grant, collected by the former governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, had made this disclosure on Sunday, July 30 via a statement released by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.
According to SERAP, the 200 billion Naira fund was collected by the Okowa-led administration from the state’s Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC.
This development is coming after on reports of a Freedom of Information Suit filed by SERAP was made.
The Rights group had gone on to reveal that the judgement was given by Justice Daniel Osiagor.
Accordingly, the court directed the present Delta state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori to disclose the components of the budgetary allocation between 2015 to 2019.
In Justice Osiagor’s words:
“SERAP has identifiable legal rights to investigate and determine the way and manner public institutions manage the public funds allocated them.”
“With that in mind, every citizen has a duty of requesting transparency and accountability in the governance of public institutions.”
