Why it matters

Unusual rainfall patterns, leading to casualties, are being experienced in many countries worldwide. This could be attributed to the climatic phenomenon known as El Niño, characterized by warmer ocean temperatures, high humidity, and strong winds.

Climatic predictions suggest that more regions will undergo weather changes due to this phenomenon.

In Brazil, El Niño has caused unprecedented rainfall, resulting in flooding and the collapse of a dam, leading to 30 confirmed deaths, 60 people missing, and thousands displaced.

What they are saying?

  • Helicopters are being used to search for stranded individuals.
  • In severely flooded areas, helicopters are unable to land, necessitating the winching of residents to safety.
  • In the Candelária municipality, residents sought refuge on their rooftops as floodwaters engulfed their homes.
  • Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul state has appealed for urgent assistance, emphasizing the need to rescue hundreds of people across multiple municipalities.
  • Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has visited the affected region, pledging support from the central government.

Meteorologists predict further rainfall as a cold front moves through the region. Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology attributes the intensified and frequent rainfall to El Niño.

Bottom line

Global warming and climate change have altered weather patterns, posing threats to global sustainability. Efforts to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events are imperative.
