Former MLB player David Justice recently shared insights into the reasons behind his divorce from actress Halle Berry during an episode of the ‘All the Smoke’ podcast with Matt Barnes.
Justice revealed that differing views on household roles and parenting played a major part in the breakdown of their marriage.
“I’m looking at my mom, I’m a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, and I’m thinking OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with? And at that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly,” he explained.
He reflected on his youth and admitted he lacked relationship experience before marrying Berry. Justice also said their marriage might have survived if they had sought therapy.
“I was young and naive then… We honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it,” he said.
Justice pushed back against public perceptions that blamed him for the split, stating that Berry was “dead wrong” to portray him as the problem.
The couple tied the knot on January 1, 1993, and finalized their divorce on June 20, 1997.
Since then, Justice has been married to Rebecca Justice for 24 years, with whom he has two children. Berry is currently in a relationship with musician Van Hunt and is mother to two children from previous relationships.
