West African leaders had at the conclusion of the summit held in Abuja, Nigeria to discuss on the Niger Coup, said that discourse with the leaders of the coup in Niger will be the foundation of their approach to the crisis.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the West African organization had stated that the bloc was prioritising diplomacy, instead of conflict which he had previously threatened.
Recall that there had been threats of military action if Niger’s ousted President Mohamed Bazoum was not reinstated by Sunday, 6th August deadline.
The Nigerien coup leaders had ignored the threats continued with their takeover. Correspondents had also reported that the opposition to a military action have increasingly grown especially from within Nigeria and from Mali.
Note that Mali is supporting the Niger coup.
The military junta has meanwhile recently announced a new 21-member government, with vital posts going to those who headed the coup.
Bola Tinubu had also expressed confidence that this second ECOWAS summit on tackling Niger’s crisis will be a determining moment towards a tougher, more resilient, and integrated West Africa.
