Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, DR Congo’s prime minister has resigned on Tuesday, setting off the dissolution of his government, according to the presidency via a statement.
The prime minister had submitted his resignation to President Felix Tshisekedi eight days after his mandate as a national deputy was validated. He will now be joining the parliament as a member of the assembly.
The presidency in another statement that was released on Tuesday that the the resignation has been accepted but that the president has asked (Lukonde’s) government to keep handling current affairs in the country until a new government is establish.
The presidency had however, not specified Lukonde’s reasons for stepping down.
Lukonde had been appointed the premier of the mineral-rich central African country in February 2021 and after being re-elected in December, Tshisekedi instituted a representative to identify a majority coalition within the National Assembly with the aim to form the next government.
