The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Olufemi Oluyede, had after the incident, arrived Awka to arrange the transportation of the EFCC officer to Sokoto for burial. The attack which reportedly occurred around 4 am on Friday when EFCC operatives were on a mission to apprehend suspected cybercriminals.

It was said the operatives had successfully raided the first home of suspected fraudsters, arresting several individuals and seizing exhibits, including credit cards and four luxurious vehicles.

Upon attempting to arrest more suspects in the next home, the EFCC team faced resistance. The suspect, fearing they might be robbers or kidnappers, refused to open his door. The reports making rounds on the Nigeria social media space vastly differs from this media report by the EFCC.

According to various posts on the social media platform X, the suspect who shot at the EFCC operatives had done so on the assumption that they were armed robbers. In addition, it was said that his wife had sounded the alarm after the EFCC operatives had scaled a wall/fence into their compound at about 3:00am.

The report further claimed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s officers had done so after earlier spotting two luxurious vehicles (a Benz and Lexus) parked inside the compound.

This twilight raid by the EFCC has raised multiple questions, with several netizens posing the question of “If there were indeed yahoo boys or cyber criminals in Anambra, why was the raid being done secretly at night?”

Conclusion

The EFCC Enugu Zonal command had dispatched the team to Awka, emphasizing the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that investigations are underway, the suspect in custody and his firearm recovered.
