Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan is now ready and will be presented at an emergency Arab summit in Cairo on Tuesday, according to Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. The plan aims to ensure Palestinians remain in their land, countering controversial proposals that suggest relocating them.
Arab states are scrambling to form a diplomatic response after rejecting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to have the United States take control of Gaza and resettle Palestinians elsewhere. This proposal, announced on February 4, stirred widespread outrage as it contradicts decades-long U.S. Middle East policy that supports a two-state solution.
International Support and Funding for Reconstruction
Egypt is working to gain global backing for the plan and is emphasizing Europe’s crucial role in financing Gaza’s reconstruction. Abdelatty stated, “We will hold intensive talks with major donor countries once the plan is adopted at the upcoming Arab Summit.”
Meanwhile, tensions on the ground continue to escalate. On Sunday, Israel blocked the entry of aid trucks into Gaza, heightening the humanitarian crisis. Abdelatty condemned the act, stating that using aid as a weapon of collective punishment is unacceptable.
Ceasefire Uncertainty and Regional Diplomacy
The first phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has expired, but Egypt remains committed to ensuring the transition to a second phase. Abdelatty acknowledged the challenges, saying, “It will be difficult, but with goodwill and political determination, it can be achieved.”
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced its acceptance of a U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire during Ramadan and Passover. However, skepticism remains regarding its implementation and long-term effects.
Following the Arab summit, foreign ministers from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss the next steps.
“We will ensure that the results of the Arab summit are presented to the world in the best possible way,” Abdelatty assured.
With Egypt taking the lead in diplomatic efforts, the world is watching to see if these negotiations will pave the way for lasting peace or remain just another attempt in the long-standing conflict. The success of the Gaza reconstruction plan amid ceasefire negotiations will determine the region’s future stability.
