Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His decision, announced in a statement on Monday, March 10, 2025, marks a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as he accused the APC leadership of abandoning the progressive ideals upon which the party was founded.
Why El-Rufai Left APC
El-Rufai, a key figure in the formation of the APC, expressed deep disappointment with the party’s current direction. In his resignation statement, he criticized the party for stifling internal democracy and sidelining its members.
“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” El-Rufai stated.
He further lamented that his efforts to implement progressive policies during his eight-year tenure as Kaduna State governor seemed to have little value in the APC, which, according to him, had “castrated its organs” and disregarded its members.
A New Political Home: Why SDP?
In announcing his defection, El-Rufai declared the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as his new political home. He called on his supporters and other like-minded Nigerians to join him in what he described as a necessary movement to restore good governance and democratic values.
“At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish. I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” he tweeted.
Political Fallout and High-Level Consultations
El-Rufai’s defection comes after months of political tension and several confrontations with the presidency. Notably, he was absent from the APC’s National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last month, signaling growing discontent.
Before making his final decision, El-Rufai reportedly held discussions with influential political figures. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Former Vice Presidential Candidate Tunde Bakare, Former President Muhammadu Buhari were among the political figures visited by the ex-governor.
These consultations suggest that El-Rufai’s move may not be an isolated political decision but part of a broader realignment within Nigeria’s political circles.
What This Means for 2027 and Beyond
El-Rufai’s defection is a significant development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. As a well-known figure with strong political influence, his move to the SDP could reshape opposition politics and pose a new challenge to the APC.
His decision also raises questions about internal conflicts within the ruling party and whether more defections could follow. As Nigeria gears up for future elections, El-Rufai’s next political moves will be closely watched—and could have far-reaching consequences.
