The Enugu State government has once more reinforced that the law stating that the ban on the use of motorcycles, aka Okada, in the state’s capital was still effective.
The state government had also announced that it had already launched a task-force that would apprehend and charge those violating the law to court.
This development was disclosed by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Honorable Emeka Ajogwu who remarked that the government was concerned about the growing outcry by members of the public on the reckless use of motorcycles in the city.
In a press statement personally signed by the Commissioner on Thursday, October 19, Ajogwu had remarked that the government would not be folding its arms to watch the chaotic use of motorcycles about its capital city.
Ajogwu had then reminded the public that the law was still very much in operation and that violators risked one year imprisonment and the forfeiture of their vehicles.
The statement issued out partly read:
“For the avoidance of doubt, section 3 and section 4 of the Operation of Motorcycles (Prohibition) Law, 2012, bans the use of motorbikes in all its forms in Enugu North, Enugu South and Enugu East local government areas of the state, and there is severe punishment for potential violators.
“The state government shall not hesitate to enforce this law. Members of the public, particularly the offenders are therefore warned accordingly to abstain from the criminal act.”
