Manchester United great Eric Cantona has shown his grievances over the club ending the ambassadorial role of Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson signed Cantona for Old Trafford back in 1992 and played an important role in helping build the team that ended United’s 26-year wait for a top-flight title and went on to claim 13 Premier League crowns.
When he retired as manager in 2013, Ferguson was made global ambassador on £2.16m a year. As part of cost-cutting measures implemented by its owners, INEOS, headed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club have decided to cut Ferguson’s money at the end of the current season.
Long an admirer of Ferguson, Cantona reacted to the decision on Instagram, describing it as a “scandal” and a “lack of respect.” He said, “Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever!” clearly going after the treatment of the iconic manager by the club’s hierarchy.
Ferguson nonetheless is reportedly leaving the position amicably after a face-to-face with Ratcliffe, who just acquired a 27.7% stake in United. Cantona, nonetheless, still managed to big-up Ratcliffe, claiming to be optimistic about his stewardship and his talk of restoring United to former glories.
