The Reds were off to a pretty poor start at Stamford Bridge, and it didn’t take long for the Blues to quote a fact that would speak for themselves throughout the game: Moisés Caicedo, ex-LFC target, scored an absolute monster of a goal from 25 yards, and Chelsea led after less than 15 minutes of play.
Arne Slot’s men had open opportunities to reply, but without success. Benoît Badiashile brilliantly blocked Dominik Szoboszlai’s shot, while the shot that Mo Salah attempted after Milos Kerkez’s wrongly unmarked assist should have been a simple one by which he would have made a goal. Shortly before the break, Alejandro Garnacho hit the post for the Blues with Liverpool escaping with a 1-0 lead.
In an attempt to energize his side, Slot brought in Florian Wirtz at the beginning of the second half and within a few minutes, Salah was very close to scoring. Liverpool were able to level just after the hour mark as the ball from Szoboszlai was first muffled by Alexander Isak’s chest and then Cody Gakpo was quick enough to hit the ball into the nets from very close.
In the end, Chelsea, however, remained very strong despite both centre-backs having to leave the field due to injuries. Giorgi Mamardashvili did his best to keep the Reds in contention with the crucial saves, but Estêvão in stoppage time expertly converted Marc Cucurella’s cross, and thus the Blues won as one of their most famous triumphs.
