Nigerian rapper and actor Falz has explained that his latest album, The Feast, is rooted in the concept of unity and community, urging Africans to move away from self-centered attitudes that hinder collective progress.
In a recent interview on Naija FM, Falz voiced his frustration with the prevalent mentality across the continent, where individuals often prioritise personal gain over the well-being of others.
He believes this mindset contributes to stagnation and division.
“The message I’m pushing across is ‘community.’ I feel like we need a sense of community because the mentality that we have in this country and Africa is the ‘every man for himself’ one, and it’s not good,” he said.
The rapper didn’t hold back in criticising African leadership, saying many leaders act only in the interest of themselves and their immediate families.
He also pointed out that ordinary citizens often reflect the same self-serving behaviour.
“We constantly complain about how the government isn’t good. Why?” Falz asked, challenging people to examine how collective neglect plays a role in poor governance and societal issues.
He added that the key to real progress lies in unity and mutual support: “We need to think about the collective, every person, and we need to be there for each other. The only way we can progress and reach our full potential as a continent is if we move together.”
Although The Feast is not as lyrically aggressive as some of his earlier work, Falz revealed that the message is deeply embedded for thoughtful listeners.
“That’s the general message of my album, even though it’s not literal. It’s not as intense and direct as some of my other ones. With this one, you need to sit and listen,” he said.
Falz, known for blending activism with music, uses this project to encourage a more unified and empathetic society.
