Fatal Road Accident Claims Four Lives In Abia

Four people lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a commercial bus from Ebonyi Transport Corporation, as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Abia State Command.

The incident occurred on March 7, 2025, at approximately 2:10 p.m. on the Umuahia-Enugu Expressway, near Ohiya Mechanic Village, just after Abia Tower.

Ngozi Ezeoma, the FRSC Abia Sector Commander, confirmed the details in a statement on Saturday. She revealed that the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with the registration number 14B41EB, carrying 18 passengers—11 men and seven women.

“One female passenger died instantly, while 17 others were quickly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia for medical treatment. Sadly, three more individuals—two men and one woman—succumbed to their injuries, increasing the death toll to four,” Ezeoma stated.

She explained that the accident was caused by excessive speed and a tyre burst, which led to the vehicle overturning multiple times. “Preliminary investigations suggest these factors, though further inquiries are underway to confirm the exact cause,” she added.

Ezeoma extended her condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. She also reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to reducing road accidents in the state and urged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.

Eyewitnesses offered varying accounts of the crash, with some speculating that the driver may have fallen asleep from fatigue, while others suggested a possible brake failure.
