The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has uncovered a major violation at an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket. The supermarket, owned by Liu Bei, was found to be labelling all its products in Yuan, the Chinese currency, and restricting entry only to Chinese nationals.

This practice is illegal in Nigeria, as all products must be priced in the local currency, Naira. Additionally, discriminating against customers based on nationality is a clear violation of consumer rights.

The FCCPC has taken action against the supermarket, mandating the owner to display a public notice stating that everyone is welcome to shop there. Furthermore, the commission is considering appropriate sanctions, which could include a fine of N10 million and 10% of the company’s last year’s turnover.

This incident has sparked outrage among Nigerians who voiced their concerns about the discriminatory treatment experienced at the supermarket. The FCCPC has assured the public that they are committed to protecting consumer rights and will not hesitate to take action against businesses that violate the law.

In a separate development, the FCCPC is also investigating MultiChoice, a major satellite television provider, following their recent announcement of price increases. The company has cited rising operational costs as the reason for the hike. However, the FCCPC will be working with relevant regulatory agencies to assess the justification behind the price increase and ensure that MultiChoice is not abusing its dominant position in the market.

These actions by the FCCPC demonstrate their commitment to fair trade practices and consumer protection in Nigeria.
