The agency confirmed that the FDA is investigating a new cyclospora outbreak and is actively trying to track down a fresh source of contamination within the national food supply. Federal investigators initiated supply chain tracebacks after a wave of gastrointestinal illnesses was reported across multiple regions. While a recent cyclospora outbreak linked to produce led to a voluntary recall of shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico, public health officials warn that additional, unidentified fresh produce items like cilantro, parsley, and leafy greens might be driving new cluster infections.

What You Need to Know About the Cyclospora Produce Recall

The microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis infects the small intestine, leading to a stomach illness called cyclosporiasis. Symptoms usually show up about a week after eating contaminated food and include severe, watery diarrhea, heavy fatigue, loss of appetite, and painful stomach cramps.

FDA Investigating New Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Produce

The CDC and FDA have already logged thousands of cases nationwide this season. A major contributor was a widespread Cyclospora produce recall involving Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce shipped to stores and restaurants across nine states. However, state health departments—including North Carolina, which has recorded over 560 cases- caution that multiple raw items served uncooked in salads and garnishes are likely spreading the parasite simultaneously.

My Opinion

Every year around June and July, thousands of everyday consumers end up violently ill simply because they bought fresh lettuce, cilantro, or berries at their local grocery store.

What makes this parasite particularly dangerous is that standard washing practices at home don’t reliably remove it. Most people assume giving their leafy greens a quick rinse under cold water protects them, but Cyclospora sticks tightly to produce surfaces and resists standard chlorine washes. Telling the public to “wash their vegetables thoroughly” feels like shifting blame onto consumers for a failure that happens miles away on commercial farms.

Until agricultural regulators enforce far stricter water quality testing and sanitation protocols at field farms and processing plants, both domestically and at international import sources, these summertime parasite outbreaks will keep happening. Expecting families to worry about severe stomach infections every time they order a fresh salad is unacceptable for a modern food supply system.

Bottom Line

Reports that an FDA investigation about the new cyclospora outbreak is underway remind everyone to stay alert regarding food safety notices. While the cyclospora outbreak linked to produce continues to impact thousands, keeping up with active brand recalls and cooking fresh produce when possible are your best shields against infection.
