The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), is launching an investigation into many complaints from customers about leading players in banking, telecom, and airlines. The investigation, happening on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th, aims to address issues of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential consumer rights violations.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) plans to look into Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) due to reports of network issues that have made it difficult for customers to access their money or use banking apps.
MTN Nigeria will also be examined regarding ongoing complaints about data services not being delivered, unexplained data usage, and poor customer support. Air Peace Limited will have to respond to claims of unfair ticket pricing, including sudden price increases for flights on certain domestic routes.
The investigations are being conducted under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which empowers the FCCPC to investigate and resolve practices that hurt consumer rights, disrupt markets, or cause unfair competition.
In a related development, GTB recently apologized to customers for service delivery issues after changing their main banking system. The bank recognized the difficulties customers faced, such as waiting longer than usual.
