Veteran Nigerian actor Femi Branch has criticised colleagues in the film industry who fail to fully immerse themselves in their roles, calling them unprofessional and deceptive.
In a recent interview with HipTV, Branch did not mince words as he expressed disappointment in actors who make minimal effort to emotionally or physically transform for their characters.
According to him, such behavior disrespects the art of acting and shortchanges the audience.
Branch remarked that some actors appear the same in every movie, offering no variation in their performance.
“If you have just one expression across all your films, you’re not doing your job. You’re making the audience do it for you, and that’s unfair,” he stated, adding that audiences should not have to work hard to separate the actor from the role.
He argued that true professionals understand the importance of adapting fully to each character, whether that involves physical changes or emotional depth. As an example, he praised international stars like Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, and 50 Cent for their willingness to undergo drastic transformations in service of their roles.
Branch emphasized that actors unwilling to go the extra mile rarely get cast in high-caliber productions, as directors and producers can easily distinguish between dedicated performers and pretenders.
“If a role requires shaving your head or adding prosthetics, then so be it. An actor’s body belongs to the craft, not their vanity. The audience wants relatable characters—not polished appearances,” he said.
His comments serve as a strong call for higher standards in the industry, urging actors to take the profession more seriously and stop prioritizing looks over genuine performance.
