On Saturday, the United States won its fifth Olympic gold medal in women’s football following a 1-0 victory in the final over hosts Brazil at Parc des Princes. Substitution Mallory Swanson netted the winner 12 minutes into the second half to earn a first Olympic title since 2012 for the United States, in her 100th international appearance.
On the leadership of a new coach, Emma Hayes, who took charge only two months ago, the U.S. completed the perfect tournament run. The emotional Hayes said, “It is my dream to have been in this position. The players have just been incredible.”
Brazil came out strong; Gabi Portilho called for a key save from the U.S. goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, in the first half. Marta, returning from a two-match ban, made an appearance on the pitch in the second half but could not alter the outcome as the U.S. again denied Brazil an Olympic final—the third such defeat for the South Americans.
Swanson’s goal, her fourth of the tournament, came after a solo run and an accurate pass from Korbin Albert that split the Brazilian defense. Brazil is creating chances but couldn’t get the equalizer to the applause of their fans with the final whistle.
